Minecraft Live: Cory Scheviak Digital Avatar
A pixel-art makeover!
ABOUT:
(Not an endorsement from Mojang Studios.)
I created a virtual avatar for my friend Cory, who is a developer for the video game Minecraft.
The Pixel art character was front and center during Mojang’s annual update reveal livestream called “Minecraft LIVE”, Which was being broadcast to nearly half a million people across the globe at the time. The avatar even made an appearance on Minecraft’s official Instagram account, with a following of 9.5 million people.

PROCESS & OBJECTIVE:
Advanced pixel art technique and specialized 3D modeling software were used to create an expressive and realistic avatar within the low-resolution limitations of Minecraft’s default character model.
Each element of the avatar to represent something special about him:
- The face is modeled after a silly screencap of his own face, representing his fun attitude.
- The blue Hawaiian shirt with cookies is a reference to his older cookie monster avatar.
- The shirt has the logo of the charity event he founded, Love tropics.
- The shorts have a bee pattern since he was involved in adding them to the game.
- And finally, the sandals represent his Minecraft mod, “Tropicraft.”

OUTCOME:
I’m really glad the avatar’s funny face made a lot of people laugh and smile, (apparently even the event’s film crew was in hysterics)
I’m very thankful to be a part of such a project. Cory’s life goal is to inspire others to be the best version of themselves. If you want to learn more about him and his various projects, I highly suggest you give his blog a read!
